Wellness, Nutrition, and Technology for Busy Professionals – January 12, 2023 – Sponsored by Florida Lawyers Mutual

The Technology & Health and Wellness Committees Present:
Wellness, Nutrition, and Technology for Busy Professionals

    Sponsored by Florida Lawyers Mutual

Description: Please join your fellow OCBA members and attendees in learning about the infusion of wellness, nutrition and technology. A panel of speakers will be addressing these topics. As part of the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to experience, taste and sample wines while learning about responsible drinking habits and learning how socializing with wine can maintain a healthy mental state.

    Mental Health Presentation
For many in the legal profession, the term “lawyer mental health” may seem contradictory.
The demanding hours and stressful work environments often have detrimental effects on legal professionals, who struggle to balance severe stress and self‐care. A 2020 study found “Roughly half of practicing attorneys are experiencing symptoms of depression and anxiety, with approximately 30% of those falling in the mild range and nearly 20% falling in the moderate/severe range.”
For these reasons, lawyer mental health and wellness, also referred to as legal wellness or lawyer well‐ being, needs to be an essential consideration for law firms, law schools, bar associations, and legal professionals. To combat these troubling statistics, this program will present how legal professionals can adopt new practices of Mindfulness in order to improve their work‐life balance, reduce stress, and increase overall well‐being.

    Dietitian Portion Presentation
Technology has become a daily part of the lives of lawyers, with many using their smartphones, laptops and other devices to stay up to date with work. However, relying too heavily on technology can have negative consequences on both our physical and mental health. To ensure a healthy relationship with technology, lawyers should take measures to optimize digital health and wellness through habits such as limiting screen time, being aware of overuse and eyestrain, and avoiding digital interruptions.
Registered Dietitian Kait Richardson will present nutrition tips for busy professionals and include technology tools that help (along with some that may not be so helpful) the busy professional with accomplishing their nutrition goals. Making small changes in diet can lead to benefits in many areas of our lives, including energy levels, self-awareness, and of course how well our clothes fit. There are multiple technology tools available for tracking our health habits and guiding us in making the small changes. Kait will discuss a broad range of these tools and share tips and tricks for using each. She will also include areas in which technology might be holding us back from achieving our goals, especially for busy professionals with rigorous time demands. Participants should leave her sessions having a plan to establish goals for themselves and have a list of technology tools to help keep them on track to achieve their goals.

    Speakers:

Marni F. Stahlman, Ph.D., ABD, President/CEO Mental Health Association of Central Florida
    Kait Richardson
