    OCBA Members-Only Webinar: How to Become Board Certified

    April 13, 2021 | Noon to 1:00 p.m. | Live on Zoom

    OCBA members are invited to join us for a live webinar overview of the Florida Bar’s lawyer certification program, what it means to be board certified, advantages to participating tips for success in exam preparation and the impact that COVID-19 has had on the Board Certification process including the Florida Supreme Court’s recent administrative order.

    Bios:

    David Willis is Board Certified by The Florida Bar in Business Litigation, Construction Law and Real Estate Law, David Willis devotes his practice to construction, real estate and commercial matters. Board Certification is the highest level of evaluation by The Florida Bar for competency, experience, ethics, and professionalism. David is one of 15 Florida attorneys who are certified in three areas. David currently serves on the Florida Bar Board of Legal Specialization & Education. He is a member of the BLSE Executive Committee and incoming vice chair.  He previously served on The Florida Bar Construction Law Certification Committee from 2010-2016 and has held the vice chair and chair positions. The Committee is responsible for reviewing applications for Board Certification and preparing the certification examination. David also served on The Florida Bar Business Litigation Certification Committee from 2004-2010 including serving as vice chair.

    Jessica Travis is Board Certified in Criminal Trial Law. She has served on the Florida Bar Criminal Certification Committee from 2014 to 2018, and as chair of the committee from 2017-2018. She has served as Chair of the OCBA Criminal Law Committee, and currently serves as Executive Producer of the OCBA podcast, The Legal Limit. She also serves on the OCBA’s Executive Council, and is past president of the OCBA Foundation.

    First Annual Virtual Elder Law Game Night with Judge Rodriguez

     Date: 4/21/21

    Time: 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

    Description:  Join us for some good spirited competition as we test our elder law knowledge using Kahoot! Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform that brings engagement and fun to 1+ billion players every year at school, at work, and at home.  Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers.  Judge Rodriguez will be hosting the game and you will enter the game using a code.  You can play on your phone, but will also need to have your Zoom link open to see the questions. Apparently there is a Kahoot app that can be used as well.

    RSVP today.  A Zoom link will be sent to registrants from OCBA prior to the event.  (Please check your spam folders if you do not receive a Zoom link  in your inbox.)

    Speaker: Judge Frederick J. Lauten

    Frederick J. Lauten served as a judge in the Ninth Judicial Circuit for 26 years and as chief judge of the circuit for the last five of those years. During his career on the bench he sat in every division of the county court and in various divisions of the circuit court. Judge Lauten presided over the Ninth Circuit’s Business Court division from 2007 until 2012.

    As a judge, Fred presided over a wide variety of cases including complex civil, criminal, probate, guardian and mental health cases. Prior to serving as chief judge he served as administrative judge in the civil and criminal divisions. Fred also has had the privilege of sitting as an associate judge on the Fifth District Court of Appeal.

    Fred had significant involvement in the statewide judicial system. He served as dean of the Florida Judicial College, the college that teaches all new judges in the state, from 2006 to 2010. Fred served as the education committee chair of the Conference of Circuit Court Judges for four years and also served as a Florida Supreme Court mentor for new judges. Fred has been appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to numerous statewide committees including the Judicial Management Council, the Trial Court Budget Committee and as Chair of the Working Interdisciplinary Committee on Guardianship Stakeholders. During his judicial career Fred taught numerous substantive and management classes to his colleagues including Evidence, Criminal and Civil law and Managing Complex Commercial cases.

    Fred received numerous awards for his service on the bench including the 2016 American Board of Trial Advocates Trial Judge of the year, the 2018 James G. Glazebrook Jurist of the year and the 2018 Mental Health Association’s Community Hero Award.

    Fred has lived in Central Florida for over 50 years. He is married to his wife, Shelley, and has two grown children.

    2021 OCBA Gala and Installation Ceremony

    Cancellation Policy:
    Individuals can cancel up until May 11 for a full refund. No refunds will be offered after May 11, 2021. The OCBA is monitoring ongoing developments with the COVID-19 pandemic. Should the event be postponed or canceled due to the pandemic, refund options will be offered to ticket holders.
